Did Apple Just Prove Us Right?

There is some big news out this week on a topic I’ve written a lot about.

If you’ve been on our website lately (hopefully you visit it often), you know my team and I have published several reports on the quickly evolving satellite industry.

Lots of folks are talking about the space race these days.

As billionaires fight over who went further into space, the real opportunity remains on the commercial side of the industry… not space tourism.

Satellites and the companies that put them into orbit are the real story. They represent new technology, new opportunities and fresh ways of making money.

They come in many forms – from large imaging satellites to tiny, shoebox-sized devices that merely carry out short-term experiments.

But the biggest opportunity in space right now comes from that little device that seems to be in everybody’s pocket. The revolution in technology it has brought on has changed our economy, our social norms and even our jobs.

And now, according to some fresh reports this week, our smartphones are about to head to space.

It’s just as I’ve detailed in those reports.

You Heard It Here First

According to widely trusted Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, there is a very good chance the next iteration of the iPhone will have the ability to communicate by satellite.

If that’s true… it’s huge.

It’s the first step toward widespread adoption of the idea and, potentially, an entirely new business venture for Apple. If it happens the way I think it could, we could all soon be paying our monthly phone bills not to Verizon or AT&T… but to Apple.

The first generation of this new technology appears to be slated only as a sort of backup form of communication. Apple will allow iPhone 13 users to link to a satellite in areas where traditional cellular reception is not possible.

That makes sense. It’s quite early in the game, and the infrastructure isn’t fully in place yet. Plus, a satellite connection is still expensive.

But that will change… quickly.

We’ve all seen the evolution of smartphones. They’ve changed immensely over just the last decade… But now I’m convinced we’re about to see the next BIG leap.

Ultimately, it’s trouble for 5G – the oh-so-expensive network that has taken far too long to build out. If satellite (which I dub 6G) takes off before 5G is fully rolled out, it could cost companies billions of dollars – which, perhaps, is another reason Apple is taking its time.

The Opportunity Ahead… and Overhead

The evolution to satellite-based phones is obvious.

Coverage is better. The bandwidth potential is huge. And, the real cherry on top, moving to satellite allows Apple to scoot around traditional cell carriers. If it launches its own satellites – which it’s rumored to be looking into – Apple could quickly become a dominator in the communications space.
