A “Pill for an Ill” Is No Way to Beat the Aging Process

How long you live comes down to more than whether or not you hit the genetic lottery.

Our bodies are almost constantly battling enemies such as inflammation,1 mitochondrial dysfunction,2 oxidative stress,3 epigenetic factors4 and various traumas.

You don’t need to know what all those 10-cent words mean. But know that they all have a negative impact on the aging process and your health.

And if not addressed, they can do serious damage to your body over time.

A Pill for an Ill

As our cells and organs begin to decline, our bodies’ defense mechanisms also weaken. This coupled with exposure to those stresses mentioned above can lead to rapid aging and chronic diseases.

Conventional medicine accepts this as just the way it is. That’s the way doctors are taught. They treat symptoms, not the cause.

I know firsthand that doctors are trained to give a “pill for an ill.” Then they’ll see you in three months for your refill. And if that doesn’t work, they’ll just scribble a different prescription on their pad for you.

That’s like taking the batteries out of the smoke alarm when it’s going off instead of looking for the fire.

That’s how conventional medicine treats the aging process. It’s totally backward.

Functional medicine, on the other hand, looks for ways to address the root cause of the condition. And there have been ample breakthroughs on this front. Supplements, hormones and exosomes can be added back into the body to correct the underlying issues and alleviate the stresses on your body.

These treatments have brought shocking improvements in many areas. Chronic conditions like autoimmune diseases5 can be reversed. Same for osteoporosis.6 Success comes – again – by addressing root causes.

Start Slowing the Aging Process Today

There’s a great axiom in the health industry: In, out and away. Meaning, keep the good stuff in, get the bad stuff out and keep the toxic things away.

This starts with what you eat. When possible, eat organic. Eating mass-produced, genetically modified crops all but ensures you are consuming pesticides.7 Pesticides can cause leaky gut in humans just like they were designed to do to the insects they repel. Worse still, some are carcinogenic (cause cancer) and others are neurotoxic (cause damage to the brain).

But clean eating isn’t enough. Our food supply has been depleted of much of its nutrients compared with 50 or even just 20 years ago due to fertilizers and a lack of crop rotation.8 Today’s food produces less iron, zinc, protein, calcium and vitamin C.9

Importantly, fertilizers also drain selenium from the soil, which keeps it from being absorbed by the plants. Selenium intake has been linked to the reduction of breast cancer.10 The mineral also supports antioxidant activity, which protects cells from dangerous free radicals.

That’s why supplements are more important today than ever before… especially if you are on long-term medications for other ailments.

Many drugs interfere with your body’s ability to absorb nutrients from dietary sources. Proton-pump inhibitors that are used to reduce acid reflux and heartburn can prevent proper absorption of vitamin B12.

And cholesterol-lowering drugs – statins – can inhibit the production of the Coenzyme Q10 compound, which plays an important role in preserving our cells’ energy supplies.11 Additionally, some diuretics can deplete magnesium, potassium and calcium.

So if you are on any of these, it’s even more important to boost your diet with the appropriate supplements.

Designed to Last

One of the leading experts on aging, Walter Bortz II, believes the human body is designed to last 120 years. As the former president of the American Geriatrics Society and a professor of medicine at Stanford University, he has published volumes of research on the aging process.

Incidentally, 120 years is the same amount of time prescribed to mankind in Genesis 6:3:

Then the LORD said, “My Spirit will not put up with humans for such a long time, for they are only mortal flesh. In the future, their normal life span will be no more than 120 years.”

We’ve got a long way to go before that can become an appealing reality. But we can give our bodies the best support they need in fighting the aging process. And it starts with following the principles of in, out and away.
